"The Gaze" - Alanna Ciarlandini

Her View- Alanna Ciarlandini

"Thomas’s jazzy photomontages of women’s limbs and facial features can be construed as commentary on how female bodies are brutally picked apart in contemporary visual culture."
Throughout the history of pop culture, it is evident that people can misinterpret a woman's image. This can often happen in the event of a woman showing "too much" skin or presenting herself with a face full of makeup. Whenever a woman presents herself in this way it is implanted in our minds that when a woman decides to look good or dress up it is done to impress. Contrary to belief when a woman decides to look beautiful it is not always for a man. A woman can dress up for herself but unfortunately, sometimes society doesn't see it in that way.

"Patriarchy demands of men that they become and remain emotional cripples." - Bell Hooks
Patriarchy is society's belief that men hold power and women...well women are seen as the less superior gender. Patriarchy is not only the belief in false male domination but it also projects the false idealities of how a man and woman should present themselves to the world. For example, the expression of a man's emotions such as him crying can be seen as weak and can be looked upon as feminine. Due to this men usually keep their feelings intact in fear of judgment.

"Patriarchy promotes insanity." - Bell Hooks
Being true to ourselves is one of the greatest forms of therapy. Pretending and concealing your true identity can be harmful and because of this, it is important to express yourself. When emotions are suppressed they can create a lot of tension and unhappiness. Those emotions reside for so long until you finally reach your breaking point.

"Men act and women appear." - John Burger
Society presents it as men are always seen as the ones to take the initiative. As for women, society presents them as mere objects for everyone to view. However, men should not be expected to always forge ahead and women should not only be judged upon as an object.

"Consequently how a woman appears to a man can determine how she will be treated."
 - John Burger
Even though we live in a more modern world I along with many other women can find this statement to be deemed true. I feel if a woman dresses in a certain way men only view them as an object of pleasure.
