Excerpt from: An Introduction of the Performance Art
"It often forces us to think about issues in a way that can be disturbing and uncomfortable, but it can also make us laugh by calling attention to the absurdities in life and the idiosyncrasies of human behavior."
I feel like performance art is an excellent way to raise people's attention and provide them with direct messages. Since most performance art requires action it is found to be more alluring to the viewers. Performance art can be seen as outlandish and sometimes bizarre but that is what makes it good and comforting.
"Performance art differs from traditional theater in its rejection of a clear narrative, use of random or chance-based structures, and direct appeal to the audience."
As a person who enjoys going to different broadway productions I feel like performance art and theatre have a lot in common. In a play there is a lesson but it is not always direct. Maybe the main characters story is a subtle message to the audience but plays are not primarily focused on teaching and are more for entertainment purposes. However, the purpose of performance art is to be as direct as possible with whatever message the artist wants to discuss.
Finkelstein, Chapter 4 Advertising, Chapter 5 Fashion
"Advertisements have to be arresting." (Finkelstein, Chapter 4 Advertising)
I agree that advertisements must be arresting. When creating an advertisement the main objective is to CAPTURE your audience so you can KEEP your audience. It is hard to maintain an audience with bland statements. People need to have their attention drawn to things in order to commit to them.
"Advertisements create communities of like-minded individuals." (Finkelstein, Chapter 4 Advertising)
Depending on what item is being sold or what is being advertized when a company or person attains an audience they usually share many of the same traits. For instance they are more than likely to share the same taste for liking the same product. The more a product is liked among the people the more ranks on the kinds of consumers you have begin to grow and establish different groupings.
"The importance of fashion cannot be underestimated as an influence on the everyday world we inhabit." (Finkelstein, Chapter 5 Fashion)
Fashion is everywhere. Fashion is inevitable. People are often judged by their apparel. Depending on what you wear you can be stigmatized. Fashion is so crucial that people need to be aware of what fabrics they decide to dress in for work and other functions.
"Fashion is a system of classification that engages the imagination and trains us to recognize the symbolic impact of material goods." (Finkelstein, Chapter 5 Fashion)
Fashion is not only some kind of social code but one of the biggest factors in determining a person's persona. We can make assumptions that those who wear more loose clothing are laid-back, prefer to be comfortable, and have little to know care about social judgement. We can assume that those who chose to wear obvious expensive clothing want to be acknowledged, treat themselves, and take more pride in their image. Fashion created a system where humans can get a glimpse of how another person may act without actively asking or knowing them. Brands on clothing control what we find to be luxurious and what we find to be cheap.
