Quotes:
1. "We are increasingly self-conscious and alert to how others are looking at us. Indeed, thinking about how others see us is an engrossing preoccupation. Pop psychology has made ‘people-watching’ and the search for ‘motives’ into respectable pastimes."
I chose this quote because it relates to my performance video. As humans, we always have this feeling that we are being perceived or judged by someone like people are constantly watching our every action. Not only is "people-watching" more advanced due to social media, but it's normalized to document every life moment or it's like it never happened if everyone didn't see it.
2. "When we come to see ourselves through the eyes of others, to evaluate our lifestyle and possessions in relative terms and in comparison with prevailing fashions, then a new level of significance is added to our social experiences. We become self-consciously aware of the other’s importance indefining our own identity-" (page 195)
We are worried too much about what other people are thinking of us then we forget to focus on our true selves, it is almost like we are performing to be perfectly perceived by others.
3. "The birth of fashion coincides with other changes in society and heralds an era in which individual desires are made into realizable pursuits." (192)
I believe Fashion and individualism are important to culture and society people are able to express their sense of self as well as their place in society.
4. "When the styles and practices of the upper classes are imitated, when their fashions ‘trickle down’ to their ‘social inferiors’, Veblen argued that these leaders were immediately impelled to redesign and reconstitute themselves. In this way, the upper classes were always inventing new styles to maintain their difference." (204)
It is interesting to think that the upper class differentiates their style once it becomes popular and trendy. Once everyone follows a certain trend is no longer considered fashion it over played.
