The image above was inspired by Andy Warhol's "Skull" The red lighting makes this image almost look as if it has a filter which is what I was aiming for without filtering the photo itself.
"The way in which each sees the other confirms his own view of himself." (Chapter 5)
When I see this quote I hear the phrase "projection". Berger makes this statement to describe the relationship between two people unequal in power. This quote can refer to seeing one another in real life or as an interpretation in art. When people see a certain group of people portrayed as confident, powerful, and well-presented others may believe that they are inferior to them. I feel like these thoughts and interpretations speak for the mindset and being of the person who developed them.
"What is a love of art?" (Chapter 5)
Throughout these chapters, Berger discusses how both artists and viewers use art to discover the means of life. So what is a love of art? Is loving art appreciating the messages artists put behind their works? Is loving art admiring something that we find pleasurable to look at? There are many answers to Berger's proposed question but what we do know is that art is found in all forms and in none. Art can be whatever a person wants it to be. There is no constant or "right" form of art which is what makes the characterization and usage of the word art so wonderful and expansive.

As we are in the digital age, trends are equivalent to obsessions. They last for who knows how much time, a day, months or years and die out but sometime return. Our feed is riddled with advertisement of objects mostly useless that may grab your attention. If you see others having the same object then the desire of having said object grows and at some point an obsession grows. We tend to attach ourselves to materialistic trinkets as if that will feel the void and bring us happiness.

To be an exception a painter whose vision had been formed by the tradition and who had probably studied as an apprentice or student from the age of sixteen, need to recognize his vision for what it was and then to separate it from the usage for which it had been developed."

It is hard to break away from fundamentals since its safe to stay within them. Breaking away means struggling and most people do not want to do so. It is interesting to see new creative processes and works from artist who struggled to make their own style in a world where there are rules even for 'out-of-the-box' creations. I disagree and agree with this quote. Everyone has their own idea of what art should be and what fits in it. When learning art or learning any new subject it takes time and struggles. So I think anyone can make exceptional work and whether its successful or not depends largely on how others take it. At this point the creator has to think why they create art, who its for and will the outcome satisfy me or not. I think artist are told to expect there to always be gratification or some type of award to have status, when in reality most pieces go unappreciated which is okay. What mostly matters is how the artist feels about it. Why should a piece always be considered for others? This might be because of the idea of wanting to be seen or acknowledged to feel validated. I like the idea to create for the sake of creating.

This image was inspired by Andy Warhol. I wanted to recreate his creative artistic abilities by portraying pop-art/ painting visuals within my selfie. I was inspired by his seemingly playful, colorful and meaningful art. I edited this selfie of myself to seem like a paining with bright pops of color along the edges. Andy Warhol's art allowed people to give it their own meaning, and many people interpreted it in different ways.

— This quote stood out to me because it reminded me that different forms of art display or emphasize different things. I like how there are many different forms of art to portray different feelings and emotions that can be relatable to many.
“It is painted with great skill to create the illusion in the spectator that he is looking at real objects and materials. We pointed out in the first essay that the sense of touch was like a restricted, static sense of sight.” (Berger chapter 5)
— This quote stood out to me because it reminded me that each artist has his or her own way of seeing things, and a different story to tell. What the artist chooses to emphasize can unlock many other thoughts and visions within the person looking at the art.

John Berger - Ways of Seeing Quotes
Quote #1: "Visitors to art museums are often overwhelmed by the number of works on display, and by what they take to be their own culpable inability to concentrate on more than a few of these works." (Berger, 44).
- I've been to some art museums in the past few months. My favorite one was the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Though I did enjoy myself, my one problem was that I truly was overwhelmed by how much artwork there was. I have yet to completely walk around the Met and see all that it has to offer with its art.
Quote #2: "They are there in all their particularity that we can study them, but it is impossible to imagine them considering us in a similar way."
- I really think this quote is something interesting to think about regarding the wealthy and famous people. An example could be a famous singer. We, as fans, are the reason behind one's success if we stream or buy their music, go to their concerts, buy merchandise. It's because of those that are considered to be "lesser" than them that they have reached fame in the first place. However, no matter how much power fans can have, with their idolization of a celebrity, the celebrity won't feel much for them.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a struggling graffiti artist who lived in Brooklyn in the 1970s. He was introduced to the art industry and began selling t-shirts, postcards, and collage work when he was down on his luck financially. Fortunately, he sought fame and made this dream a reality at only 17 years old. Basquiat sparked the interests of many aspiring individuals who followed in his footsteps to what it takes to position yourself in this world. Art had always been his passion, and with the help of those who believed in him, Basquiat was able to make a name for himself despite facing the hardships of poverty.
Graffiti is about taking over the space and getting to know a better sense of the artist who created the piece. The main objective for Basquiat was gaining status and recognition for his artwork. Some artists would graffiti their name or spray-paint text on a wall, but Basquiat was able to fill in the white lines with his own taste of creativity.

Art undeniably makes the world go round. It is about reclaiming the space and making it yours. If everyone comes to appreciate art, then maybe everyone will enjoy the little things in life. Art retells a story based on personal experiences and shows passion for something that is truly "loved".
"And the painter in him - who is both and less than the old man - has found the means to express just that, using a medium which had been traditionally developed to exclude any such question." (Berger 112)
Artwork is mirrored to reflect what emotions or attributes that person is feeling when creating that particular piece. Art in a sense has a soul, which is meant to be designed to your liking. By expressing ourselves through art we let our individuality shine through and let the viewer have a better understanding of who we are as a person, why we create art, and overall helps us to look back on what we did. Essentially, painting defines who the quote is necessarily talking about.

Jean Michel was a graffiti artist in the 1970s. This image was inspired by his graffiti work. Unlike most graffiti artists, Jean made sure to use deliberate messages in his work. He changed the graffiti world and impacted a lot of people greatly with his statements he left all over the city.

Quote 1- “And the history of the tradition, as it is usually taught, teaches us that art prospers if enough individuals in society have a love for art. What is a love of art? (Berger 84).
Without art, the world would be boring. Art gives us the freedom to create whatever we are feeling inside. If enough people continue to have a love for art then we could all express our own experiences and appreciate this form of storytelling. A “love” of art comes with being vulnerable and passionate. We can't "love" art if we aren't willing to open up and tell our stories.
Quote 2- “All has gone except a sense of the question of existence, of existence as a question. And the painter in him- who is both more or less than the old man- has found the means to express just that…” (Berger 112).
Being able to express yourself through art is a gift. Art allows us to be free, vulnerable, expressive, and bold. When we express ourselves through art we leave pieces of ourselves in our work and bring individuality to the picture or painting. This quote is demonstrating how this man found his voice through art and has been able to speak his mind through his work. He found what it means to really express himself and create true art.
